Another step

LosdaBear's picture

I took pictures at the 2006 All Star Championships this past weekend and things have been hopping in my neighborhood ever since. I handed out around 100 flyers at the games themselves and quite a few business cards too. I also took about 3000 pictures with my new Canon 30d (which I just love). Every night I have been downloading and processing and posting pictures in my rugby gallery on smugmug (http://lineofsight.smugmug.com/rugby). Since then the traffic has on my sites has started to go through the roof (230 visitors in my gallery) and I have gotten one picture in the Glenwood Springs Post Independant newspaper and I'll be getting some in Rugby Magazine. I have also had one sale off the gallery so far. I'm swamped and actually exhausted. One thing I learned is that when shooting sports, shoot jpg, RAW just takes too much time and hard drive space for something that is good for a week or two at the most. Speaking of that I better send an email to Sports Illustrated today.

Great shots there! I give a LOT of credit. What you're attempting is really hard. I've read that once you establish yourself it can be quite lucrative. I wish you well in your quest!

Update: I got a picture in the Post Independant in Glenwood Springs and got paid a little. I also had two small orders from my gallery. Overall it was fun and I learned a great deal but as a business venture it sure did not have the ROI that is needed for success. I did pass out a lot of cards and got a lot of traffic in my galleries so overall I would say it was worth doing. Maybe I need to figure out a better marketing strategy for these type of events.
