Image Critiques

MailMan's picture

I have noticed that most posted images are asking for extensive critiques like the note below.

"Critique: I would like an extensive critique of my image please."

Is there a specific place or method for doing this or is the Comments section the only place to critique? Some sites have specific Critique pages for more in-depth "extensive" constructive criticisms... I was just wondering.

As a side note to this, I have found that extensive critiques don't really work unless a designated Critic/Admin is doing all the writing. Most regular users don't have the time and are too timid and anything harsh often ends up being controversial.

For those of you who want them, what exactly are you looking for? A short sentence or two, or a full paragraph at least?

People love to get comments on their art. That's why they posted it, so that someone can see, enjoy, respond to it. Some people don't want others to nitpick their art to pieces and will have the option to change their critique setting.

When submitting an image, the options are:
I would like an extensive critique of my image please.
I would like a critique of my image, but please be nice.
Comments are welcome, but please don't critique my image.

We had a professional critic make some lengthy comments in the past

Some people LOVED him, others really didn't appreciate critiques coming from non-artists. He was the main reason we created the critique option on the images. So if someone says they want an extensive critique, then simply tell them what you do and don't like about their image. We all know that these are just opinions.

That said.... Personally, I love to hear that people like my art and just really gush on about it :) But I know that I won't really improve that way, so I hold my nose and read the critiques too. Sometimes the little things may not be obvious to me, and other people pointing it out can only help me to improve.

I usually don't even bother to notice the critique setting lol. I just say what I think, If I like it, I say so. Though I'm not a pro at all, I can point out things that don't look right to me. They can take that into account or not. Maybe they intended for it. no Probs.
