Critique per your request. Composition: Once again, it seems your
style is center the object and make a somewhat squarish photo. Don't get me
wrong, some images make a great centrist composition, like this one
http://www.artalyst.com/node/193. And just like the portrait of
the boy I critiqued, the subject has tried to create the composition for you.
What this means is, when you make a casual glance, it seems that a thirds
type of composition has taken place, with the larger bubble to the right, and
smaller ones to the left. But upon closer inspection, you see that the
horizon line is dead center and the bubbles are cropped to be centered in the
frame. It's entirely possible that the judges you mention may not notice this
or care. First impression is that the composition is not at fault.
Creativity: You score above average with this photo. The subject and
lighting both are fairly creative. Subject: If you stop and think
about it, the bubbles are really uniteresting. But that's only a concern of
deep philosophical people. Your average viewer will be amazed at the crystal
clear spherical structures. The arc of blue reflection across the top is also
stunning. You have obviously gone for the wow factor here, and it will pay
off for you with the majority of viewers. Technical: Very well
exposed. Excellent contrast and color. Too bad the depth of field was too
shallow and lost focus on the top of the larger bubble. Image Quality:
Sharper than most of your images. No noticable compression sickness.
Thank you for taking the time to do this for me. I had never even noticed the
horizon line being dead center until now. Your time is greatly appreciated!
9-10-05 Just a happy side note! Today I went to the fair where I entered this
photo in the "Digital Photographs" category - and I did win 1st PLACE!!!!
YAYYYYYY! (See my blog link for photos) Also around the beginning of the
year, this same photo was selected out of about 11,000 entries, to be put in
a 200 photo book. The book is all about photography and the different
aspects, and this one was chosen for lighting. Still, with this new
knowledge, I am now more than ever looking forward to taking new shots for
next year!
I LOVE this image & I don;t care where the horizon line is. I have been
lookng at hese beautiful bubbles for 2 years & I have never even noticed
that! O.K. my eyes are hurting now....must go & look at something else:)lol
