I have a news item about contest and prizes for a couple of weeks and no one even questions it? hmmmm. Oh, and some one could have told me I had the wrong date on it LOL. Oh well, just to let you know that the contest has started now. Check the home page. Prizes for this contest will be announced on June 16th next friday. I wanted to have the prizes "in hand" before saying for sure.

great idea, but i hate to think that you are having to award prizes out of your own pocket..you are going to have to advertise..i have prints to offer you as rewards if you need...also a small telescope..

I don't think it's about who can spend the most amount of time on the site. It's about getting people to participate. It's about encouraging comments & critiques & uploading of images.

Great news about the prizes :) It seems to be working already looking at all the new images and comments going on already. Good news for the site

Thanks everyone, like most of you have determined already, I'm trying to build some site traffic. My advertising dollar wasn't doing to well, I think because the site was getting a little slow. People show up and don't hang around.
So I decided to spend my money differently. It's a good way to reward all of those who have been, and are currently participating in the community. My hopes are that people will comment on some of the older images too. People usually get emails that they have a comment on their image and they'll visit the site to view it, and maybe they'll comment some too.
Also, there aren't any big prizes like a Cannon D20 or anything like that yet. But when the site gets bigger, the prizes will grow with them. I'd like to hold other contests, but not all the same. Variety is nice.
FYI, the points awarded currently are (2-image) (2-comment) (1-vote).

Ok, prizes are listed on the contest page now. Thanks for the idea for offering prints Jim. And thanks for offering yours too. That may be a good idea for upcoming contests. As for this contest's prizes, you know that the purpose of this contest was to drum up participation and the prizes are all 'approximately' the same value. I'm very happy about the increased traffic on the site, I see more contests in the future. And of course as we get bigger, the prizes get bigger.

So how's about a contest just for fun, maybe not even a contest, but say we pick a theme or subject, and we just all submit a piece of artwork for it? I think it would be really neat to see different mediums used for the same subject. ?? Just a thought....

Could be, but photographers might not find illustrators works as worthy of the vote as their fellow photographers. Likewise with those illustrators who have toiled with creating all their work from scratch, they in turn, may vote accordingly lower on the photography, which is capturing, no matter how skillfully, subjects that are already in existence, or "Just There". :) Now the Photo-Manipulators would just end up flipping the already rocking boat, with the knowledge that they alone rule the day, as anyone can merely point a camera or doodle in vector. Who would judge? Who would Vote? Peer judging works better when there are no material prizes involved, I think. Anonymous peer judging often results in voting misconduct as SOME only see the PRIZE and instead of voting for an image, end up voting against an image to better their own final position. Out to lunch? Maybe I am, or maybe I've seen too much? Just some things to consider. A Just for Fun Contest? I think that would be great! pixeladdiction.com would be a great place to use as a model for such a contest. :) Brian -
