Art Guilds and Competitions

zeedaam's picture

After finishing the print selling magic, on to a different subject:
.
Members (users with Membership) will be able to obtain (relics, badges, markers, whatever we decide to call them) by doing certain things on the site. You can find them, earn them, etc. When a Member collects a certain set of these badges, they will have the opportunity to start an Art Guild. This person doesn't have to remain a Member to keep the Art Guild, but has to be a Member to earn the badges required to start the Art Guild.
.
The Art Guild can be named whatever they like. They can recruit other users to their Art Guild. Those in a Guild will carry the title of their Guild with them throughout the site, displayed with their username.
.
The point of being in an Art Guild is competition. Art Guilds will be able to challenge each other in art competitions and contests. Ranking and rewards will follow. Artalyst was created so that artists can create art, get feedback and such without having to worry about a competitive atmosphere. But the addition of Art Guilds and Contests within them only will add some drama and excitement to the community. This sort of thing will happen in the backrooms of the site, like in the forums and blogs.
.
Working on this fast and hard. Any feedback is welcomed. I got a lot of last minute ideas in the "selling art" thread that I was able to implement.

This sounds great, I like a challenge..so the chance of creating or being part of contests and competitions is good. If this helps build a community....then even better. So....you don't need to be a member to be part of a guild if invited? Guilds will challenge other Guilds, or can they create there own challenges within their Guild? Can the Guild creator design their own badge, relic.whatever it's called or will it be allocated. Can you be part of more than one Guild?

Anyone can join the Guild, even if they are not members. The only competition or contests will be between Guilds, not within. A user can only be in one Guild at a time. About the badge design, I'll give that some thought. If nothing else, Guilds could display their own custom signatures or avatar borders maybe.

To expand on being in only one Guild at a time; other than technical reasons, it should create loyalty for the Guild they're in. Guilds will have their own "area" to conduct their affairs, this includes their own forums they can make public or private

Will the guild creator be able to decide who can be in the guild? Los

The Guild leader will determine everything that happens in his/her Guild.

Updating... . The Art Guild gets a home page that can be edited anyway you like. The Guild founder can grant anyone in the Guild certain permissions like Admin, Captain, etc. They can post Guild news or other similar posts on their homepage, including polls. They can have 3 different Guild Forums that are accessible by Guild members only.

How big can a guild get...will there be a limit?
zeedaam's picture
That's a good question. I was thinking of no limit. I would guess it would depend on how hard I make it to create a guild. I'd like to think that guild quantity vs member quantity would equal out. Example: if there were too many in one large guild, there would be little to no competition, and some members would split up and form their own. Likewise, several small guilds might join together to offer a greater force in the competitions. . Again, I'd hate to have 2 big guilds just dominate the site. Then the only way to compete would be to join one of them. Then administration would have to step in with some kind of "anti-trust" judgement lol. . What do you think?

I asked the question about the size of a guild as I thought it may cause problems if some get too big and start to dominate areas of the site. I see Guilds as a good way to get people involved and get some sort of ownership of the site, but I can see lots of squabbling arising from them when people fall out or disagree with the way a guild is being run, especially once they are established and people have been members for a while and things don’t got their way. I see lots of complaints coming in the admin direction! I do have reservations about individuals having sole control of a guild, especially large ones. An option would be to share admin of guilds if they get to a certain size. How about one individual can have admin control of a guild with say…upto 20 people. If they want to progress from 20 to 50..they would need to have another user or two with full admin privileges like them..and so on. I have concerns with a guild being created…and working well with one individual in charge, then that person disappears of the chart…what happens to all the users of that guild that have bonded but the admin has gone awol. I like the idea of teams merging…well…more like joining forces but keeping their individual guild! A bit like tag teams (possible two smaller guilds tagging together to take on a larger guild, not sure if that will be possible) This would allow smaller guilds to form but compete against the bigger guilds, and allow for more individual guilds to exist. I am really thinking allowed here, just some thoughts

Good point about awol'n Guild founders. Should be an easy fix, say the founder has no Guid activity for... 30 days, they loose the Guild. Then let the Guild members vote on the new leader. Plus Guild founders will be able to appoint Guild admins to help out or take over during temporary leaves.
zeedaam's picture
Ok, got this so far. 1) after reaching prerequisites, user can apply to be a Guild Founder. 2) Guild Founder creates their guild and can invite Guild Members. 3) If guild size gets proportionally larger than other guilds, recruiting it temporarily frozen. (this way there will never be a need to split up guilds, that would suck.) 4) Guild Founder can appoint any of their members to Guild Admin (full permissions) or Guild Captain (limited permissions) and Guild Member which is the default when someone joins a Guild. 5) Guild Admins can perform the same tasks as the Guild Founder. 6) The Guild Founder cannot quit a Guild until they are demoted from Guild Founder and another is replaced. 7) After 30 days of "Guild" inactivity, the Guild Founder is removed and a site administrator will conduct a poll to allow the remaining Guild Members to vote on the new Guild Founder

Sounds good

Cool, now I need to just figure out how to handle letting Guilds Challenge each other. I guess a special forum is all that's necessary there. Ok, that was easy :) . Now, how to set up the "battleground" for the contest to take place.
KevD's picture
Will the battleground only be viewable to the guilds involved, all guilds and members or open to public viewing? How are they going to be voted? How do you keep the voting impartial! Do you allow guilds to vote on thier own images?
zeedaam's picture
All can view the contest, all can vote except the Guilds involved. Seems the only fair way to me.
zeedaam's picture
Thinking about multiple types of contests. Team (2 Guilds, multiple members from each) One on One (Guild Founder against another Guild Founder) Free for all (weekly/monthly theme based contest that anyone from any Guild can enter)

I guess I'm not seeing the why of the contests... Los

For those who want them. I'm just trying to give people what they want. No more reason than that really. . edit: I'm not making this the focus of the site if that's what you mean. The site is about art, posting art, getting comments and competing against yourself. The Guilds (and resulting challenges) are just an extension of the forums/community and will stay in that area.
LosdaBear's picture
Cool. No worries really. I have been so out of touch with photography sites, etc. that i guess I just lost why anyone would want to be in a guild or group and compete like that. Making a living with a camera is competition enough for me. Los

I can see where your coming from. You put art to work for yourself. Many here though just do this as a hobby. So there is an entertainment value to consider.

True enough... Los
