[Contest]: Halloween 2009 Photo Art Contest
- Forums:
This is our first sponsored contest. The sponsor is getting us the prizes to be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Generally I would like to have these types of contests for Subscribing Members only, but we don't have very many right now. I would like to take this chance to thanks all those who have supported the site over the years and those who have donated to the site to become members. In the future however, contests with prizes will be bigger, better and Members only.
Any questions on the theme or details of the contest, post them here.

Do the image we chop have to be taken totally by ourselfs or can we use stock images for some parts?
You can use stock.

"I'm VERY new to the site and don't know if I uploaded right. And why the EXACT sizes to photos? Thats kinda a pain in the you-know-where.....Not that I'm ungreatful."
Only the 2 thumbnail images are required to be exact size, one at 80x80 and the other at 260x170.
That's because the way the gallery is displayed on this site, in a grid. We are looking at easier ways to create the thumbnails on-site though.
Any suggestions on (free) photo shop sites to manipulate pics on? I've used the one on flickr and photobucket and they are the Pain-in-the-(beep) places I mentioned before. I think I just need more practice but it takes sooo much time! I'd rather be painting or drawing! LOL. Another ?, when ppl mention stock images to use what do they mean? Like taking someones work and reworking it to post here?
Thanks for the response and patience!!!
Why isn't there a link to see artwork submitted to the Halloween contest? Or am I missing it? or is there one? there is no 'search' bar and the links that are here just take me around in circles!
www.aviary.com was created by a friend of mine. You will have to sign up to use it, but I believe it is still free to use all the web-based software there.
There are a few sites like deviantart that have stock images submitted by their users which are free to use so long as you link back to them or give them credit. I believe that's what Kev was talking about.
You can see your image in the "My Images" link in the menu to the left. You cannot see the other images in the contest until submission ends and the voting begins. This contest is for prizes, so secrecy is important for everyone to be impartial when voting.
Aviary is a good one.
Here's a link to Sumo Painter. They just released 2.0 and there's no registration required.

Thanks, I think I like that sumo paint. Haven't heard of it yet.
OMG! I made it to step 2 for pic upload and spent forever trying to make the photo fit the 260-170 requirments useing a couple of dif. editing sites and now its telling me the image is over limit "The file is 83.19 KB exceeding the maximum file size of 70 KB." After getting the 260-170 perfect how do i change it to 70KB? (!!!!!!!!!!!!)
If you are saving as a .jpg, just lower the quality a little. Whatever program you're using should have an option for the jpeg quality setting. 83kb for that size image is really high.
How is that done in sumopaint?
I've never used sumo paint, but I tested it out real quick.
After you have your image like you want, click on File in the top left corner,
then select "Save to My Computer",
A window will pop up with "name" and "format" settings.
With "format", choose "jpg"
A quality slider will appear, select somewhere around 70% to 80%. That should be good enough and keep the file size low.
Yay I finally got the hang of it thanks to you zeedaam! Thank YOU!!! I tend to get all flustered and anxious when it comes to my artwork and the paint program is really great to use. Thanks for answering all my questions and being so patient...later dude!
I hope I entered my last 2 images right, I should have 3 in the contest now....? Thanks again zeedaam!
If you need to upload an image to the contest, use the link from the contest page. The "Upload Image" link in the left hand menu is for uploading to the general gallery. I moved your recent images to the contest though.
It looks like you took care of it yourself :-)
I thought the contest was open until 1pm? It is barely 10:19am here. Did I confuse something?
That was 1pm EST.
This is new for us, I'll keep the contest open for 1.5 more hours, till 3pm EST
Oh okay, makes sense. I thought it was 1pm adjusted for our time zones, but I could have misinterpreted that. Thanks for the clarification! The images for the contest look so good! Can't wait to vote! :)
It was supposed to be adjusted for your time zone. I'm guessing it didn't work right. That's why I'm extending the contest.
I totally goofed up in my contest entry...ugh...just getting the hang of this. But it is fixed now... I can be so lame-brianed at times! LOL! But, having tons of fun - and that is what counts! :)
How long will the voting last? Just curious....
I'll be sending an email out to remind everyone to vote and the deadline. But it will be Friday Midnight, EST.
