Amateur Photographer's lament

We spent this past weekend at Point Beach State Forest, which is on Lake Michigan, about midway along the Wisconsin shoreline. I hadn't done anything "serious" with my camera for several weeks and I was itching to get out. The week prior, I put in almost 70hrs at work, including 3 1/2 hours on Friday, when I was actually supposed to be off. So when we arrived early Friday afternoon, I was pretty burned out and I decided to take it easy. We went for a drive, then came back, lit a campfire and relaxed. So no photography that day. I did spend some time reading my Outdoor Photographer magazine though!

On Saturday I had full intentions of spending some time hiking and otherwise milling about with the camera. At one point late in the afternoon my wife and I sat for several hours on a picnic table by the lake just talking and generally enjoying the fact that we had time with one another without interruption. It was cool and breezy and just a fantastic day. I had the camera and tripod with me so as we talked and gazed at the lake, I took some shots of this and that. Mainly cloud formations with a bit of the lake. The sky and the lake had some wonderful shades of blue and green and the clouds were the big puffy type. None of the shots I took are particularly good, mediocre at best. But at least I got to shoot a few photos.

It's just been so hard to get any time to shoot. I think about it a lot. I envision photos I want to make. But I can't do much to satisfy the desire. I probably should get in the habit of carrying it to work with me. Every so often something presents itself that I can't capture without the camera. Another day passes...

I completely understand how you feel. I haven't used my camera in over a year! I keep saying I'll get out and do some shooting on the weekend, or sometime I'm finished with the site. But it never happens. Like this weekend, I have to go to my niece's birthday party, I may try and shoot then. Kids are perfect for candid shots.

I really can't wait to start getting back to artwork again. That's what I'm really looking forward to.

I understand your lament, about time to shoot. But wasn't it worth more to just sit and enjoy your surroundings, with your wife and just let the other things go. It was a long week, and you need time to relax, and for myself, Photography is not relaxing. You spend time trying to get that just right shot. Tain't neccesarily so for others. Take your camera to work and home, something might just pop up. But reading what you said, I say the quality time you spent with your Wife, far outweighed any pictures you could have taken. You may take this with a grain of salt, I have no idea of your age, but, I've been there and back at 59.
