Yeah, it's pretty silly. It happens around the holidays every year. I've just learned to go with it. I have more contest prizes, but I'm waiting until the first of the year to bother using them. It's like trying to jump start a engine, have to crank a few time before it gets reved up.
Agreed, we'll have new contest, prizes, articles, and tutorials at the first of the year, that should charge it back up again. Plus I have a new feature that I've been working on that I think will be fun.
I didn't think it would be this hard to give away an HD camcorder. Participation in the new contest is low. Everyone has a greater chance of winning because of three things. There are less images with zero comments, you don't have to worry about one person spending all day commenting and winning the next day. And if you hang out in the new chat room, free squares are given away.
I'm kinda confused Zee...... 1, I don't want a camcorder, 2, images with zero comments are just that. From the last round I received a comment or two that were certainly patronising, erring on insulting........
I don't think I'm ready to participate further with the site until it goes back to it's old basis, trying to force comment / appreciation is not the way travel in my opinion.
Thanks for your honesty Dex. But now I'm confused. I've only tried to encourage commenting, because no one is doing it otherwise. Please don't leave, instead let's try to recreate what the site was like in the past. Let's go make comments, sincere comments. Maybe it will be infectious.
If not that, at the very least, let me know your suggestions.
I think that work with zero comments is an indicator of it's 'suckiness' and feedback enough. Competitive souls will just round up the zeros, comment and win the prize, no one gains, the comments forced and worthless and you lose the prize money.
I do understand that you are trying to make the site buzz, before the community was small for sure, I'm not sure how that works on a larger basis, which is the obvious goal.
Will try to get commenting, but time is not on my side............ with general work busyness, Facebook, RPS forum, Mercedes Forum, Model Mayhem, OMP and others......... perhaps that's the answer, a lot of active and engaging communities exist, trying to make another is difficult.
I used to be a Member of FanArtReview, left because of the nauseating comment style, but maybe that is a model worth looking at, the site did buzz, comments were relentless and all for 'funny money' and the prizes, more 'funny money'............. a valuable (within the community) prize that costs nothing...... I think there was a small subscription.
LOL, Moany is ok. I'm glad to have someone giving a voice on the site. Your first paragraph is 100% correct and it's why I won't be doing another contest like that. Out of the 3 contests, it usually generates one person, this time two, that make several comments until a prize is won. It doesn't really create a buzz, or get others motivated.
But there are still plenty of recent images submitted that don't have comments, not because they suck, but there is no one to comment on them.
I'll have to think of something else. But I love a challenge.
I have to agree that the contests aren't to good. I tried the first one and got really tired of commenting on stuff I wouldn't normally comment on. As a model you might want to look at photosig.com it's a really great critique/photo/comment site and it seems to be about the closest to what you are trying to do here on artalyst.
Hey! Hey wait a minute. I spent a lot of time trying to provide the people with in-depth comments to actually better their work, to nudge it into perfection. So there is a prize? What of it. I would not have put one pinky toe into this quiet wasteland otherwise. Now I have found people whose art I am starting to enjoy because of constantly commenting on them. I am starting to like the abstract art of Sperry, for goodness sake! I would have scoffed at it before. Sometimes in order to open your eyes to other experiences you need something else to wake you up.
Take a look at my comments. They aren't the minimum number of words needed to just participate in this contest. They are what I actually think.
However if there is no prize in the future and nobody posts anything interesting, I sure would like to know how to delete my account. Thank you. I hope this has not been a waste of time.
Heck.............. just popped in, 0 members and 34 guests........... how are we going to convert them them? I feel for you Zee............ really wish I knew the answer!
I can tell you that my time has been getting sucked up by so many other things lately, not the least of which was a new laptop purchase, which meant learning Win7 and installing software, as well as tweaking things to my liking. I'm hoping to spend more time here again soon. I only participate on 2 photography/art sites. I'd never be here at all if I tried to do more. I have no clue how some people are able to spend time on more than a few sites.
I recently got a new laptop too. Windows 7 with the touch screen and all that jazz. Kinda neat. Been gone a lot lately too. There are new pictures posted to the site but no one has cmented yet. i'll try to do that....
To help out the site, I'll pledge to participate in some way at least 4 days each week.
Now that I think about it, at least for a month. I'll see what's going on after that.
No ads here, because the site is supported by members. They make donations to keep the site running, and we give them as many nifty perks as we can think of.
For just $3 a month. You know you can pay more than that for a cup of coffee?!?!

Well Zee, i have to say this place is far more interesting when folks are here.

Guilty. Visiting family and stuff got me off target.
Christmas was wonderful but hectic. I'm back!
Welcome back all. Hope you guys got plenty of goodies!
