I just want to commend 'The Critic'.
Why? Nice concise critiques. Formatted, thought out, easy to read. What more could an artist want out of a critique?
Well done!
agreed. it would be a real treat to receive a critique from "The Critic" hint hint :-)
Yes it would be a real treat! I hope he comes back soon, and well - I want one of my bubble pic - I entered it into the State Fair Contest and this would be cool!
Its no wonder he is a professional - I love his TACT! I dont know about anyone else but I wish I could be so articulate!
We wish you could be too Becca... :P All kidding aside, I totally agree with you both.
Well thank ya LOS! :) LOL! Seriously - I love this guy!
Oh, I just read his critiques.. very, very well done.. Are we critiquing his critiquing skills? ;-) LOL
I think we all have a lot to learn from this person, not only by his critiques, as he really does know what he is talking about , but also by the way he critiques. He is precise, concise, gives solutions and explains himself without making the artist feel like he is being personally attacked. He is judging the work and not making an evaluation on you as an person.
I've not taken any photos all summer, but critiques like these, make me want to upload several of my photos from the former site.
Hello everyone. Thank you all for the warm welcome. Tact for me is very important, you artist type are really sensitive :) I have been known to be really harsh, usually when trying to get rid of someone so I can get on with my work. That's how I got the nickname 'The Critic' based on the John Luvitz character in that cartoon show.
But I've got to tell ya, I can't take a photograph, nor draw a damn thing to save my life. I do however know what looks good to me. And you people do to. Don't be afraid to give the same kind of critiques that I give. Your first perception is that you will be hated or disliked because you said something negative about their image. But I can tell you that I have had nothing but "Thank You" messages sent to me with nearly every critique I've given.
If you keep giving pats on the back, they will eventually become so insincere, that they will just be ignored. The artist will enjoy the REAL critiques much more.
I know that that type of critique is really difficult to make for every image, that's why I only do about 4 or 5 per night. It takes a long time to critique that way. But you don't have to do the full spectrum. You can do what you know. One person may focus on Composition, while another may offer some advice on the Technical Execution. And if someone takes the time to critique your image, return the favor. It would mean a lot to them, for taking time out of their schedule to leave one on yours.
Once again, thanks for the welcome. I've been lurking around this site for months now. It has great potential. But it takes PEOPLE to really make a community website work.
Thanks for saying this TC.
Welcome aboard “The Critic”, I am glad you have come out from lurking and decided to share your critiquing skills with us. I have to say I have enjoyed reading them, even to the point that I tend to go straight to the “last comments” area first when I arrive at the site, just to see if you have left anymore.
I also like your thoughts on returning critiques within the site, that way we will make this a better community here.
So.. when do you start the critiquing lesson in the forum ;) I’ll be first to sign up.
I've been reading the critiques of the critic until nauseous. Although I'm sure you all appreciate other artists' opinions of your work, it gives you something to work toward, someone else to share an opinion. however, this guy not qualified to critique your work. it seems to me you'd get some professional to make comments so that your work could develop and mature, become more sophisticated with lighting, textural qualities, values....you know, elements of design. things you learn in 101 art appreciation classes??? just thought i'd finally add my two cents. p.s. is "the critic" cartoon copyrighted??? kt
Here is my 2 cents on your 2 cents KT. Not trying to down you or be rude to you. I do believe that THE CRITIC is fully qualified to be handing out these wonderful insights! I think he has done this voluntarily - not brought in so to speak as someone paid to do critique work such as an art teacher ect. I have to tell you that in my case - He was dead on with what he had to say, and it was proven to me in my first competition with live judges. I have thought for some time that my "Boy in the Corner" photo was probably my best work. He gave a critique on it, with suggestions ect, and after looking at it differently I saw what he was saying and even more. I had entered it into the State Fair last week before his critique came, and yesterday I found out that it did not even place. My bubble pic however won first. I personally asked him to give critique on that one, and he said basically it was one of my better photos and that your average judge or person may not notice the small details that are missing. I didnt even notice some things until he pointed them out. Personally I value his opinions greatly. Would I like to learn even more - of course! But I dont think it is fair to say he is not qualified, as he has worked as an editor. ( I believe thats what he has listed in his profile ) From my experience at a newspaper, he looks at things the same way my photo editor did. With all that said, I think his insight, along with other's, is going to help me improve my work 100%, and I am happy he has generously given of his time.
Quite a few people on this site are professionals in art related industries kt. We've gone through this before where some people had a cow over anothers critiques because he couldn't take good pictures. Being able to take pictures does not a good critic make. You been a member here for how long? 5 hours? Hmm... I for one appreciate the Critic's critiques they are fair, tactful and full of quite a bit of insight without being condescending or rude. Don't like it? Don't read it... Just like TV.
well, i find this topic amusing..i am primarily a member here to display my artwork, and pick up tips on photography..i know that many of you did not care for BigAl..he is crude and to the point..but he has experience and quite knowlegable on photoshop..i learned more from him than anyone else so far.. i appreciate everyone's opinion including the Critic's. but had rather have experienced advice.. also, it irritates me ,when someone steals an image to use as their avi..not professional..
That's great! I have a fan :-) Firstly, there's no need to be defensive for my sake. Thank you though. kt and jimt have opinions just like I do, and I welcome them the same. I also felt a little stupid, so I checked the site rules (legal page and faq) but didn't see any professional requirements for posting critiques. The professionals on the site weren't really offering many critiques so I thought I'd chip in. I didn't know spending about 10 to 15 mins of my time to comment on someone's image was so controversial. I don't apologize though, and perhaps I'll post some of my work to share.
But the question really is who do you want a critique from. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe you would like comments from both an artist, and a beholder.
Anyway, yes 'The Critic' is copyrighted. And no, I'm not selling my services.
There are no requirements for posting critiques, a critique is merely an opinion. Some feel the only relevant opinion is from someone who is a demonstrated pro, but I think the most valuable critique comes not from them but from an educated layperson. Why? They can articulate what they like and dislike about something they might potentially buy. I'm more interested in what the person who is willing to pay me $1000 for my work has to say about it than 1000 so called professionals who won't buy anything from me. If they all hate my work but 1 art dealer who sells to people with money loves my stuff, who's the winner? I make my art for myself but keep in mind what people might want to buy and if I can match the two together when I point my camera... so much the better.
hey! i like that avi!
I just want to commend 'The Critic'.
